Wehle Nature Center

Simply beautiful! The Wehle Nature Center is rich with history, and bountiful with wildlife. Most mornings I sat on a bench, and watched deer walk around camp and woodpeckers fly by. The trails throughout the campus offer great views for birding, or just enjoying nature. In the evenings, I was amazed by the number of stars that I could see. The facilities were great for our training event. Staff could not have been more helpful during our stay.

This is located is one of the few "dark (night) sky sites" in the Eastern US/Alabama, as it away from civilization, and hence has very little light pollution to block the view of the stars. It became cloudy the night I came to try to view a meteor shower (June Bootids shower), but I can imagine it will be great when I come when there's a clear sky with cool temperatures! It was also great because there was a pull off where I could park, and a fence and hilltop and welcome sign that made me feel a little more comfortable. When you're stargazing, it's nice to have a place that feels intentional since we're talking being out at about 1:00 AM+.

Daughter went on a field trip from school with Macon East Academy. She said she had a wonderful time and learned a lot.

Absolutely gorgeous grounds- several paths/trails for walking and horse riding. I especially loved the scenic walk around "Alligator Lake". All roads/paths are gravel or grass though, so not very wheelchair accessible. I stayed in the dorms which were a cozy, cabin-like feel; they were separated by male/female and had many rooms with bunks beds & communal bathroom (most rooms had no door though, I assume for ease of monitoring kids?). Dining Hall has an industrial kitchen and communal seating space with good WiFi.

Beautiful place to ride and camp

Beautiful amazing place, a must see !

This place is amazing! Horse trails, hiking trails, camping....It is truly a gem.r Unfortunately it is only open to the public one or two weekends per month. Still, I sure enjoyed my visit and I hope to return in a few weeks to camp with my horse and ride the beautiful trails. Don't forget to visit the covered bridge, which is only about a half mile or so walk from camp.
